Weekend

We had a fun weekend! Friday night we went up to Keith & Shelly's halloween party. I worked until 5pm so we didn't get there very early so we didn't bother with costumes. There were some good ones though! I liked Ryan's "In distress" nightshirt/dress! Keith & Maggie were Pop-Eye and Olive Oyl. Jon & Shanda were Cinderella and the prince. Tony & Sarah as Nancy Kerrigan & Michael Vick. Very good costumes! We stayed the weekend at Keith & Maggie's. Saturday we went to a craft show and shopped around Appleton. Then 5 of us girls got pedicures and then met the guys for pizza. The guys shot guns & moved wood/furniture at Killam's. Sunday on the way home we stopped at Mom & Dad's after gospel meeting and Mom made us fish. Brett got to see all the dogs! He loved every minute of it, even all the puppy kisses. Tony & Sarah Jon & Ryan The guys out by the fire Christine & Stacy Jon & Shanda Uncle Keith & Brett Auntie Maggie & Brett Brett & Rouge (Brett wrapped her up in the blanket) Brett & Dayna Oh & here is a video of Brett shooting Keith's (empty) paintball gun Saturday morning: video

Pumpkin to Jack-O-Lantern

Today our activity was to carve a pumpkin. Everyone got to touch the pumpkin & try to lift it. Then we talked about how it grew all summer and looked at the side that layed on the ground. We talked about how it grew on a vine and then it was cut off and now the pumpkin has a stem. After I cut it open we looked inside and we took turns digging it out. E declined but the rest wanted to feel. S & the littlest one didn't partcipate but we got a picture of everyone with the jack-o-lantern afterwards. I didn't plan on a design, this is what we got cause I just had to hurry up & make the happy face that was requested before lunch. There wasn't much time. He still turned out cute. It's really hard to get a picture of the group but here they all are. We have one more pumpkin so maybe Brett & Daddy can carve one together.

What kind of cake are you?

You Are Strawberry Cake
Fresh, sassy, and romantic. You're a total flirt, who never would turn down a sugary treat. Occasionally you're a bit moody - but you usually stay sweet!
You might say some of this is true (for me, Stacy)! I definately agree with the frosting part of the quiz-I love frosting, bring it on! Or forget the cake, let's eat frosting! LOL I know someone who would agree with that (are you out there Shanda??) Ok, it really depends on what kind of frosting. I don't like that Cool Whip stuff. That's not frosting, it's Cool Whip! If you're going to have cake, you may as well have frosting. Here's some of my favorite frosting recipes: This one is just from the Hershey's Cocoa Container, but it's the best chocolate frosting. The original recipe says to melt the butter but I just soften it.
This is my mother in law's frosting recipe she used for wedding cakes. Reminds me of our wedding cake she made us, mmm-white cake with raspberry jam filling and this frosting. Since we had our wedding in WI and a reception in MI, we had two cakes. There was a lot of cake leftover from our MI reception and I recall eating a lot of cake!! I'm so glad she shared this with me. I don't really ever make this one, but I plan to use it more. Maybe for my little ghost cakes today? I just don't remember to make it but I really like this frosting. I know Mom made it at home some and Dad really likes it. Super sweet!

Trip to the Dentist

OK, I've become one of those freak moms who takes their camera everywhere!! I guess I'm not the only one because the hygienist said lots of moms do it. Must be the scrap booking thing. Well someday this will probably end up in a scrapbook but not any day soon! I have a picture with his pediatrician when he was a baby and it's a neat picture. The actual dentist seems kinda crabby like he wouldn't appreciate a picture so we didn't take any with him. : ) Brett & I both got our teeth cleaned. He must have my chemistry because he has very little build up. (Damon usually has to sit through a lot of scraping.) He's had his teeth cleaned several times before but was very interested in watching when it was my turn and asked lots of questions. Great learning experience! He played with "Mr. Thirsty" but tonight he's calling it "Mr. Sucker Man".

Happy Birthday Kyle!

Kyle, our only nephew, is 14 today! Wow! Hope you had a great day Kyle. It sounds like we'll celebrate with you next weekend. See a picture of the kid when he was brand new: Kyle's baby picture Too bad I don't have time to find another one & scan it. He will probably be glad I didn't. : )

Morning Glories

My morning glories are finally blooming now that it's the end of October! I wasn't sure they would bloom since it's so late in the year. Sunday on the way to meeting we saw a fence along I90 loaded with morning glory blossoms so mine aren't the only ones. This is the result of many seeds. I've had to cut back the vines because they get so out of control it's almost scary! It's fun to watch grow & even nicer now that it actually has flowers. Next year I'll have to get the seeds started earlier.

Fall Colors

Our tree out front is finally changing this weekend. It's so pretty!

Pumpkins!

We went to the farmers market to get a couple pumpkins. We got a whole basket of squash for $9.95! In the freezer it goes! Here's a few pictures.

Super Hero & Little Doggie

Here's Brett's get up-he's been running around with this costume on pretending he's somebody! It's so funny. It's a black cape, orange toy safety goggles and little powder blue gloves from the Target $1 section at Easter time! You can tell he's really pretending. He totally changes with those gloves on! While playing dress up, he found Little Doggie! Yay!! He's been missing for over a year. This special Little Doggie was from Vern. When he was living here and we took him to meeting, sometimes Vern would bring Brett these little toys. Brett has loved this doggie so much. He already had a bigger special doggie from Grandma H. so that's why this one is Little Doggie. He must have been wrapped up in some dress up clothes because we looked and looked for him and we play with the dress up stuff often. Anyway, he's found and Brett's making up for lost time-Little Doggie's getting the royal treatment this weekend!! Brett had to call Daddy at work right away and tell him. It was his first thought!

Three Woolly Bears

Last week while I was at Grandma's I found these three caterpillars by her door. I put them in a container and brought them home. The kids are enjoying them! We put them in a jar with a twig and some grass and looked them up online. They are "woolly bear caterpillars". They turn into Isabella Tiger Moths. They aren't very beautiful but I think we'll try to winter them and see if it works! It seems pretty easy:
1. Find a brown and black banded woolly bear caterpillar in October (check the lawn, garden, or even the road) 2. Put it in a clear plastic jar with a lid (be sure to punch holes in the lid) 3. Add a twig in the jar and include some fresh grass for your bear to eat. Note: Put fresh grass in everyday. Soon your bear will tire of perching on the twig and will go to sleep on the bottom. 4. Remove any remaining grass but leave the twig in the jar all winter long. 5. Find a place outside that is protected from bad weather (a covered porch is nice) and you will be able to watch it hibernate. 6. In the spring, when weeds start to turn green it is time to feed your bear. Feed it fresh grass every day. Soon it will spin its magic cocoon of silk. 7. In about a week it will become the Isabella Tiger moth. On a nice day, take the jar outside and set your "tiger" free.
It doesn't sound too hard or too much to commit to so hopefully we get some Tiger moths!

What letter do you see?

Brett was showing me letters he could make on Friday morning. He always amazes me!! Top left-Y, I, t & z.

I Wonder If I'm Growing

I sure like this little song by Raffi. We are listening to it this morning. You can listen to it here: I Wonder If I’m Growing I wonder if I’m growing I wonder if I’m growing My mom says yes I’m growing But it’s hard for me to see My mom says eat your sandwich It’ll make you grow up tall But when I eat my sandwich I’m hardly bigger at all. And I wonder if I’m growing I wonder if I’m growing My mom says yes I’m growing But it’s hard for me to see My mom says wash your hands now Then you can go & play Hey! I can reach the tap now for the very first time today. And I think I must be growing Oh I know I’m really growing My mom says yes I’m growing And now I know it’s true. It makes me feel all sentimental about my little boy getting so big!! He sure has grown over the summer. Brett was very sweet yesterday and Damon took these pictures of us.

Crazy Hair!

Last night before meeting I was trying to do something with Brett's hair. It's really long & looks messy. Last time he just had a trim and his next appointment had to be rescheduled so it won't get cut until Monday night. I wet it down & put a little gel in. We always try out this look first and then flatten it down after we freak out Daddy by telling him this is how he's going to meeting. Brett always thinks it's funny! : )

My Little Reader

When I peeked in on Brett today after everyone was quieted down for naps, here he is sitting in bed reading his big Thomas book. He looks up at me like "Uh-oh! What's mom gonna say??" so I told him "finish up then it's time to get some sleep" & he was all smiles. This happens a lot. He naps nearly every day but sometimes needs a little quiet time before falling asleep.

We got "Booed"

This morning when I opened the door I found a baggie with some gummy lifesaver candies and some papers down on the sidewalk that got wet in the rain. We got "booed". Have you heard of this? Before Halloween a neighbor or friend "boos" you secretly-they drop off a treat and a page with a ghost picture that you're supposed to post on your window or door so everyone knows you've already been "booed". Then you're supposed to boo two other friends. We found out that it was Ellah and her mom. They stopped by last night while we were at meeting. Brett asked her "did you boo us?" and she said "yes" right away even though her mom said not to tell, it's a secret! So we found out who it was. I'm not going to start doing this but anyway, wondered if people do this in your area??

Pumpkin Paintings

Yesterday the kids painted these pumpkins with orange paint mixed with pumpkin pie spice. They turned out cute & smell great!

Millipedes

They are just gross! Yesterday I moved the flowerpot on the front step and found this pile of millipedes. It just about made me sick! I guess they come from the mulch in the flower gardens along the sidewalk when it rains. They are looking for a drier spot. Last year we had a pile of them on the door mat. We kept finding them all over the house too. This year so far, none in the house. I was freaked out by a large amount of bugs like that!! So sharing it with you, LOL! I found this online about them:
......The author has dealt with several infestations of millipedes that have numbered in the hundreds of thousands. One customer had so many he used a gas powered blower to round up all the dead ones and 14 Hefty bags to haul them away! This happened over a three day period,.....

Gross! At least we don't have nearly that many!!

The ones I found yesterday (after I sprayed them)

Last year's nasty find

Lettering Delights

Ok, I'll tell you how I made our header! I used the Fall Springs alphabet from Creative Delights and resized it.
There's alphabets, fonts and other digital scrapbooking images available to download. They are not free, but they are nice! Often there's specials so it's not so expensive. I can see how it could be addicting to collect sets!!
There's a Creative Delights Companion that you can download for free to organize your images and make page layouts. I haven't used it for scrapbooking at all, just used the "save image as file" so I can use them in other programs. Many of the alphabets and Journal Delights are available in PNG so there's no white background and "can be used in all photo imaging and desktop publishing programs, such as Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Fireworks, Publisher, Illustrator, InDesign, and others. They also work in newer word processing programs such as MS Word 2003 and WordPerfect 9." I think we have Photoshop but I don't use it. In Word 2007 they don't seem to be transparent but can still be used as jpegs. I don't know exactly how I'll use them for sure. The Companion really doesn't do everything I'd like. I believe there's other software that can be purchased from Creative Delights website though, so maybe I'll check it out. Not that I really have time to use it anyway...
So far I used the images I've collected in my newsletters for day care and CHAOS. I made some cute name tags for the kids closet with the Movie Monsters set. (I can use it as a business expense! LOL!) Neat stuff!

If we just had this much time...

They are slowly turning colors here...

Cranberry Bran Muffins

I tried this recipe this morning and I thought they were good. I served them to the day care kids for snack this morning and 5 of the 7 got eaten. Of course there's two little girls who won't eat anything that doesn't look familiar....... I'd say they passed the test!

Weekend with Karla

Karla is back from Mexico and came to visit on Saturday until this morning. We didn't do a lot, just had a relaxing time. Of course Brett was with her the whole time! Saturday we did some grocery shopping so Sunday she could make us a meal. She made us spanish rice, black beans, green and red salsas, steak on the grill, tortillas, guacamole with chips. It was yummy!! She brought us gifts from Mexico and we tried some candy. Damon revved up her laptop with some new memory (they got a super deal at Staples!!) Sunday morning Karla and Brett made us oatmeal pancakes with yogurt in them. The time was short but it was good to be together again before she leaves for her field.
